TEA party!
We have long supported the TEA Project which works to empower the children of families who work on the local tea estates and are some of the most deprived in Sri Lanka. This Christmas we were delighted to be asked
Our guests go mad about the food. Rani is as good a cook of Sri Lankan rice and curry as you will find. And she can also cook a range of western dishes. Many parents have told us that Jungle Tide is the only place in Sri Lanka where their kids have enjoyed eating. When we are there (January to March) we share the cooking as we’re pretty good western cooks. And we’re always up for special treats if it’s someone’s birthday or honeymoon. If you’re in luck and the weather’s fine we may have a BBQ. And Rani will be happy to show you how traditional Sri Lankan food is prepared.
For Rs3,000/- per person (children 6-12 half price) we can organise a village walking tour including shopping for food in the local small kade shops, then a cookery lesson with Rani using what you have bought and the spices from our kitchen, and eating the results in the evening. This experience is available to residents and non-residents. Please book at least a day in advance.
Please note… We welcome all nationalities and religions, and try to cater for as many dietary needs as possible if told in advance. But we like to eat with our guests when we are there, and have guests share mealtimes with each other, so we do not permit guests in the house to bring or cook their own food (other than making snack lunches). Mulberry Cottage is available for self-catering, however. Also we cannot guarantee that our meat is halal, though of course vegetarian and fish meals are always available. If eating halal meat is essential to your stay then unfortunately Jungle Tide will not be suitable – sorry.
We use eggs from our own free range hens and whenever possible fruits and vegetables from our own and neighbours’ gardens. Home-made jams and pickles. And, when we are here, our bread is home-baked.
It’s a real ‘home from home’. Everyone eats around the large dining table and swaps travellers’ tales, experiences, suggestions for where to stay (or avoid!), opinions, ideas and jokes.

Let’s be upfront about this: we realise that a lot of people like to escape traditional Christmas and do something completely different, preferably somewhere warm. But if you’re one of those who want your bread buttered on both sides –
JUNGLE TIDINGS: FEBRUARY 2023 Welcome to our last newsletter before we move to live in England next month. Jungle Tide will remain very much open, though, and we intend to come back here for three months each year, January to
While my attempts at growing vegetables continue to be abysmal failures, the fruit trees to which I give no attention whatever just carry on cropping in vast quantities, mocking my efforts. There must be a lesson in there somewhere, probably
